BEST PRACTICES
an artwork by Lauren Leung Cramer
Best Practices is a website and interactive installation that harkens to early 2000s
bedroom
nostalgia. By searching for and indexing personal objects, visitors unearth anecdotes from
the artist’s own life, collectively forming a larger narrative.
Best Practices is the feeling of sifting through the silt of the past and uncovering
memories piece by piece. My childhood memories are elusive. As a result of complex events in
my early years, unconventional family dynamics, and a genetic history of memory loss, these
memories do not come easily, and I often rely on physical memorabilia in the present to
transport me back into the world of the past. Over the years, I have developed an attachment
to collecting trinkets and tchotchkes. These objects feed the desires of my “inner child”;
they represent a time of my life that I still yearn for and feel part of through these
simple means.
